The Zuiderzee Museum in Enkhuizen is about the people who lived on the shores of the Zuiderzee to life. Believe everyday life at the Zuiderzee as it was before the Afsluitdijk turned the former inland sea into what we now know as the IJsselmeer, in 1932. The Zuiderzee Museum focuses on the history, current and future situation of the region. Themes such as water, crafts and communities occupy centre stage. These stories are visualized the Outdoor Museum with its historic buildings, and in the Indoor Museum through thematic exhibitions.
Stroll along the cobbled streets of the Outdoor Museum and go back in time! With over 140 historic buildings from places in the former Zuiderzee region, the Outdoor Museum is a village of its own. Visit the post office, meet residents from the former island of Urk and give a hand with old crafts. Don’t forget to visit the modern design presentations based on work and life as it used to be. Feeling peckish? Tuck into fresh-smoked fish at the fish-smoking shed or descend on the Café Hindeloopen to enjoy the wonderful view of the IIsselmeer.
The Indoor Museum is the treasure house of the Zuiderzee. A variety of exhibitions showcase the collection from a contemporary perspective. Join the Journey round the Zuiderzee and experience life by the former inland sea personally. It takes you from Enkhuizen by way of the Afsluitdijk and the Wadden Islands to places in Friesland such as Hindeloopen and Makkum, to return to North-Holland again, where you visit Marken and Volendam. And don’t forget to admire the large collection of historic boats in the Ships Hall.
With lots of history, photography, traditional costumes and Dutch design the Indoor Museum offers something to suit all tastes!
